This picture is serious about helping the Earth.

This morning I was offering “Happy Earth Day” to everyone, but I don’t actually know what to do to celebrate Earth Day. When it started, like 40 years ago, there were protests and lots of stuff. But now, even environmental people are hacking away at Earth Day. Grist even started a “Screw Earth Day” campaign, disillusioned with the idea that Earth is only important once a year.

Now, I’m no real environmentalist. Ever since last year’s run in with coral, the ocean’s deadliest predator, I have been actively “Going Brown” to fight back. But somewhere beneath my cold nature-hating exterior, there is a spark of recycling-friendly hope still in me.

I noticed Google changed their logo for the day, giving Earth Day at least as much priority as St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day for them.

I read the article Earth Day’s Midlife Crisis: Resolutions That Don’t Include Buying a Red Hybrid Convertible by Meg White at BuzzFlash, which talks about new ideas for “Earth Day resolutions”.

Perhaps we could treat Earth Day a little more like other secular holidays, such as New Year’s Day. Each year, we could make concrete Earth Day resolutions to change one thing about the way we use the planet.

So, what do you guys do to celebrate Earth Day?  Or does anyone even care about Earth Day anymore?
